The value of a housewife!?

There is no value for a housewife...or is there?!

I don't believe you can put a dollar value on a housewife. What employees do you know that work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week?

What would it cost you to employ a full time maid, a full time cook, a full time child care provider, a full time bookkeeper, an administrative assistant (for making appointments and keeping everyone's schedules straight), a tutor for your children to assist with homework? Don't forget nurse to all regardless of how sick she may be. She also runs all the errands (groceries, dry cleaning, prescriptions). I'm sure I'm missing some here!

Not only do they do all the dirty work, they are the CEO - all important household decisions are made by her (sometimes with the input of the VP - Dad).

That's a business, and they never quit. Throw on top of that, oodles of love, patience and passion - no matter how tired they are.

Now tell me who would sign up for that job - even at top dollar? And the housewife does it all for free!

They estimate that moms at home assume 15 different professional roles around the house. Child care is, of course, number one. They also throw in things like teacher, cook, janitor, CEO, computer operator, administrative assistant, bill payer, taxi, dry cleaner, and even plumber and auto mechanic.

Don't get me wrong, working mom's definitely are very valued! I just don't think stay-at-home moms get the credit they deserve. Especially ones like myself, that do have income coming into the home. I think it's important, for one, because some people seem to think I paint my toenails and watch soap operas all day, sit on my blog and sip coffee, while listen to peace and quite, while the children play in their rooms. Second reason being, some people seem to think that because we stay-at-home, we are just lounging around, playing with the kids. I for one know that I teach my kids a lot through out the day, do activities with them daily, pick up after everyone and keep the house tidy and organized.

I went to this site and entered in the hours I spend doing all my housewife tasks and here is my annual check that I should be receiving. {Not that I think this would even come close to what I am worth} Check it out and see what yours comes out to be.

***For the record, my toenails are usually pretty fancy. That is because I keep them pretty and painted, but lately that is because a $22 pedicure, a book, and a latte is a great big chunk of heaven, when you've got an hour to kill while your in-laws bond with the kid. (reaching my toe nails as of lately is unheard of)***

To all the stay-at-home moms and housewives! Just know that you ARE appreciated and valued, even thou someone doesn't show or tell you as often as they should!
To all the working moms...Thank you too!!!

I don't stay at home, but I agree...none of us really get the credit we deserve. I work, and I do all of these things in the home when I get home, and I don't get a lot of credit for it. I know that a lot of women who stay home just have people think that they play around all day, which I know is crazy too! You guys do lots of work!

I have no idea what you are talking about. I stay home and all I do is sip pina coladas and watch reality shows. My children play quietly in the play room all day, and then clean up after themselves. I have a maid to clean the house and a cook to make the meals. It's fantastic really. HAAAHAA!!! YEAH RIGHT! :D
Thanks for this post. It's a good reminder that others DO know what we go through and how little we are appreciated sometimes. Oh great...the baby just dumped cheerios on the floor while I was commenting and is now stomping them into the floor. *sigh*

I am exhausted after a few hours with my nephew... can't imagine doing it with 5 small ones ALL DAY LONG... I'm glad you take the time to get a pedicure, enjoy a good book, and sip that latte every now and then!!!

Good post! It's amazing to think that some people don't know how much stay at home mom's do all day! I am exhausted by the time my head hits the pillow. I am busy, busy, busy all day long! I also only have 1 child and I know that as we have more, I will have even way more laundry, cleaning, and STUFF to do. But, I wouldn't trade it for the world! I've always wanted this job and I am so thankful to spend all day, everyday with my son!
