Technique for time outs

I heard a really good technique for time outs...

Kids are very visual and sometimes need to see things to make it easier for them to understand.

This lady was giving her 5 year old a time out and she put her on the 3rd stair of their stairway. She made her sit 2 minutes on that stair, then moved her down one stair (if she was being cooperative) and she sat on that stair for 2 more minutes. Then she moved down to the bottom stair where she could get up.

(Obviously pending on the child's age, you would shorten or lengthen the time on each stair. It is suggested that a child is on time out 1 minute for each year of their age)

I am going to try this with Chase, because he will sit on time out and repetitively ask if he is done on time out. This way he will be able to 'see' when his time out will be over.

That is a good suggestion. I wish I would of had that when my boys were little. When they were old enough to understand time better, I would set a timer and they could see how many minutes were left. They knew when the beeper went off, we would talk about what they'd learned, they could apologize and then get up.
