Carseats Expire?!

That is what I said {WHAT?}
 I mean, I heard it awhile back, when Chase was little, but I guess I didn't really put two and two together...most carseats only last 5 years, and then they expire.

When Chase was 6 months old, we bought him one of these Evenflo Triumph carseats...
 Well, 5 years later (6 after the manufacture date) and it is expired. Kenzie is too long for her infant carseat, so now, we need a carseat for her. Abby is almost big enough for her booster, but we will keep her in the 5 point harness, until she meets the requirements. Kenzie however, is 2 inches longer than her carseat allows. So carseat shopping I went. After hours looking at review online, 45 minutes in the store and 3 different times changing my mind, this is what I bought...
I LOVE it! So does Kenzie! It is so comfortable and will fit her till she is 35 lbs. facing backward and 65 lbs. facing forward. It has lots of padding, that you remove, as your child grows. I got a great deal, by trading my old (expired) carseat for a 25% off coupon for this new one. {Great deal!}

My husband is not very happy that the carseats expire. I did try to explain why, but he says it makes no sense. If they were safe when they made them, they should still be safe. RIGHT?! Well, yes, but they come out with new safety technology all the time and make it safer for your children to be in the car, and they want your child to be as safe as possible. Do I agree that everyone should have to buy the minimum of 2 carseats for a child...no, but I do believe that I want my child as safe as possible.

Don't you?!

Don't forget to take a look at your expiration date on your carseat.

I am pretty sure that it's 6 years from the manufacturer's date on the car seat expiration. That's what the car seat tech told me when I had the sheriff's dept. install our convertible car seat. Once Connor is big enough to fit in the convertible, we'll move Brayden to the Graco Nautilus and then hopefully car seat hop around until the expiration dates. This is why I have a hard time purchasing used car seats, because a lot of times you don't know the manufacturer's date, nor do you know if it's really not been in a wreck. Glad you found something you like!

I've heard they last 5 years. And we replaced Isabel's with one that extended harnessing since it is known to be safer than a booster. Hers harnesses until she is 65lbs. Also its because they say the plastic gets weaker with time and use (I've heard) so that is another reason they do expire.

I only know because I just brought mine to our resale shop to sell as a travel system and it's five yrs for manu date. Stinks because mine barely made the cut...hope it sells soon :) I like your new one though, it looks nice!!

It's not really about the new technology but that the plastic gets old and brittle and will break, if it's in a car accident, whereas new plastic is stronger. Totally sucks though.

My husband thinks I have a carseat obsession!

We lucked out and have gotten a lot of use out of the first carseat that we had for our son. He's 5 now so it's about to expire but my daughter was able to use it for 2 years also. Having the kids 3 years apart worked really well in the car seat department!

I'm glad you posted this - it's a good reminder to all of those reading :)

There's a video on youtube where they show expired carseats in a car accident. They literally shatter. I'm sure your hubs would appreciate the new one after seeing it. :) And it's from the constant exposure to the heat and cold. It makes the plastic break down. That new evenflo is a super sweet seat!! Glad you love it! It was their answer to the Britax Marathon :D

I remember finding out that they expired and being a little surprised too but I think it's a good thing. I would like to have my child be in the safest possible seat.

Love the new one!
