You'd Be Surprised...

...How many people don't know how to properly strap an kids in car seats...or don't strap their children in car seats at all!

 It actually makes me mad just thinking about it!
 There should be a mandatory course you are made to take, after having a baby, before you leave the hospital.

 I am sure that in MANY car accidents, this would save the lives of children!
{I have to admit...I wouldn't know as much as I do, without taking a car seat safety course!}

Many people still use snowsuits and coats for infants {which you aren't supposed to use, since they don't let the car seat straps gets tight enough} Many people just put their child in and loosely pull the straps, to 'tighten' them. Many people don't know that the car seat straps are supposed to be 'so tight' that you can barely get two fingers underneath them. You child shouldn't be able to move. The 'chest clip' is supposed to be arm pit height, not on their belly. That is to stabilize their head and neck, if they were to get in an accident.

I am very anal when it comes to putting my children in their car seats. I double check their straps, make sure they aren't twisted, make sure they are tight enough, so that they can't move around and make sure they are in the proper place.
Let me tell you...living in Minnesota, there isn't really a way to get around not wearing a coat in the winter....but there are ways to putting your child in their car seat without a coat and putting the coat on backwards, to be safer in their seat.
{there should be nothing (no padding) between your child and the straps of their car seat, except their clothes}
If they have a coat or snowsuit on, this is preventing the straps to be as tight as they should, to properly restrain your child.

I might be anal, but I know I am not alone, when I want my child to be as safe as possible

When I was required to take a 3 hour car seat safety class {to transport children in my daycare} I rolled my eyes and said, "what in the world are they going to teach me for 3 hours?!"
Let me tell you, it was one of the most informative classes I have ever taken! Well worth 3 hours of my time. {the people who teach the class, take 23 hour classes, to learn the information}

It makes me cringe when I see other parents strapping their infants in their 'portable car seats' and 5 point harnesses the wrong way. I really want to go up and help them do it correctly, but I don't feel that it is my place. Most of them just don't have the knowledge of how to do it correctly and some of them are just plain lazy.

 There is plenty of information out there, to check to see if you are making your child as safe as possible in their car seat. There are police stations and other places that will show you how to strap your car seat in your car and strap your child in the seat. There are classes you can take, to learn the ins and outs of car seats.

{sometimes you have to remember, no matter how careful you are when you drive, the people around you driving, just might not be as careful....accidents happen and we need to make sure our child(ren) are properly in their car seats, to have the best chance of not getting hurt}

Double check to make sure that your child is as safe as possible!

I totally get peeved when people don't follow some of the most simple steps. Or, when they buy used car seats... makes me cringe!

amen sister!!!
how could you EVER forgive yourself if something were to happen and you did not take ALL of the proper steps to make sure your babies were safe?!

This is one of my biggest pet peeves! I agree, a car seat safety course should be mandatory before leaving the hospital. So many people are uninformed. I've also noticed that many people don't know their state laws. For instance, a child in my state has to be 4 years old and 40 pounds before they can get out of a 5 point harness and into a belt positioning booster.

I work at a school, and I cannot tell you how many times I have opened a car to put a child in or let them out, and their sibling is not in a car seat. I have seen a 3 week old in a car seat not strapped in at all, just laying in the seat. I have seen a 3 year old just in the backseat not strapped in. Eventually my principal found a spanish speaking teacher to talk to that mom and tell her in spanish she had to be buckled. The one that takes the cake is the dad was driving and highschool age brother was in the front seat. Our parking lot is a big square and you drive along the perimeter of it for car line. The car line shape is a big "L". This particular car had to pull down, and as they did, the highschool brother held his 4 year old sister outside of the car as the dad pulled down. Not kidding.
